Invocation

2021

Video

Created as a visual prayer for Dialogue Sunday School lesson,“Invocation” is my third experiment in depicting sacred communication and supplication through tangible and meditative forms. This video merges my interests in religious and folk traditions, bridging ancient practices with contemporary spiritual expressions.

In this piece, my personal prayer is inscribed in the Deseret alphabet within a golden circle, reflecting deep respect for my spiritual and historical roots. The gold ink symbolizes the sacred nature of the supplication, while the tablecloth—originally used in a Relief Society room—grounds the invocation in a meaningful connection to community and tradition.

By incorporating elements of folk belief, where spells and invocations are direct requests to deities, this video connects formal religious practices with personal, ritualistic expressions of spirituality. It highlights the parallels between structured prayers and folk invocations, both aiming to establish a divine connection through symbolic acts. “Invocation” serves as a reflection on how ancient rites and modern spiritual practices intersect, offering a meditative gesture that encourages viewers to engage with the divine in a profound and multifaceted way.
