Comic Con Prep Summary (and update!)

Salt Lake Comic Con is just around the corner and I’m ahead of schedule! I have my supplies bought, my art created, and everything is neatly packed and ready to go (I’ve even written three separate lists to make sure that setup will go as smoothly as possible on Wednesday!).

I have to say that I was wrong about launching Faeborn Comics being the most stressful endeavor that I’ve ever gone through. This completely takes the cake. Though it has been a long process, I’ve been able to push myself harder than ever before. I’ve learned to work faster and smarter and I’ve gotten more done than I’d previously thought possible. With everything packed and finalized, at least until I get to the Con, I’m happy to say that this experience has been phenomenal thus far.

I’m thrilled to be able to participate in the convention and look forward to seeing all the people there. I’m also thrilled that Charlyssa, the wonderful writer who I work on Faeborn with, will be coming out for the convention! This was a last minute plan but one that I think will turn out to be epic.

Stay tuned for next week’s post where I will be posting some fun stories from Comic Con! If you are headed down to the convention, check out my table and come meet Charlyssa in Artist Alley at table Silver 32! I’ll be selling prints, original pieces, and doing commissions.

Update:

Attending my first convention, and as a vendor at that, was a huge learning experience. I was able to meet new people and learn marketing and network skills that will be helpful for years to come. I may not be attending another comic based convention to display my own art but I did enjoy the time that I had there. Here are a few things that I learned/realized over the weekend at Salt Lake Comic Con:

Charlyssa Nagel, the writer of Faeborn Comics, and I click more than I thought was possible. Meeting her for the first time was strange because it felt like I’ve known her forever. As the convention went on I was thrilled to have her expertise, assistance (especially with the heavy lifting!), and spunk during the majority of the con. Her pep definitely helped with the huge throngs of people that surged around my booth.

Being friendly and making friends pays off. My neighbors, Phil Spaulding and Brian Linss, were fantastic. They offered sage advice and suggestions from vendors that are use to the flow of conventions. They helped me to improve my booth display and the traffic to my table. When Faeborn goes to conventions in the future, we will have a much better and clearer approach for conventions.

Having fun is important. Ashley Benson had a booth across the isle from my table. She is a colorful, spunky lady who knows how to have fun. We were engaged in a twitter game of photo tag and would frequently pantomime across the crowds at each other to see how things were going. This lady is one of the many new friends that I look forward to keeping in contact with over the next few years.

My husband is the best husband in the world (seriously!). Whenever I’d get discouraged or tired and would text him he always had a patient and loving response. He even left me a note on the mirror for the first day of the convention wishing me luck! He brought us food and did what he could to help out during this chaotic time. I’m seriously more in love with him now than ever before. I’m so lucky that he supports my dreams and helps me get where I want to go.

Talking about support, I’m so lucky to know so many epic Utah based artists. Both Vanessa and Chris from Pandemonium Art Gallery were super supportive and offered advice and encouragement during the convention. Both were extremely humble and kind to take the time to chat with me about how to get better at what I’m doing. Jane, the owner of Pandemonium, even sent me a super epic message wishing me luck during the convention! I really love the little artist family that I’ve been welcomed into in Ogden and am thrilled they are willing to take the time to help me grow.
